Upper Blepharoplasty
Conveniently located in Southwestern PA, south of Pittsburgh, and easily accessible from central PA, West Virginia, and eastern Ohio
Introduction to Upper Eyelid Surgery
The fragile skin of the eyelids loses its elasticity as we age, this results in sagging and the development of redundancy, causing the eyes to appear older and tired. Around one’s forties, the fat pads around the eyes become more prominent, giving the eyes a puffy appearance.
At Simona V. Pautler M.D., F.A.C.S., cutting-edge techniques are used to rejuvenate the appearance of the eyes and provide you with a younger, more refreshed look.
Upper blepharoplasty, also referred to as upper eyelid surgery, targets the dropping, excess skin of the upper eyelid and the fat pads around the eyes. By removing the excess skin, the hooded appearance of the upper eyelids becomes less visible, and the skin in this area tightens.
As one of the most common cosmetic procedures for the face, Dr. Pautler understands the need for a customized approach addressing each patient’s individual needs. Dr. Pautler’s extensive knowledge of eye anatomy and surgical techniques enhances her ability to achieve the desired results. This knowledge is also useful in identifying additional procedures such as lower eyelid surgeries, eyebrow lifts, and facelifts to maximize the aesthetically pleasing appearance of the eyes and face.
Who is a Good Candidate for Upper Blepharoplasty?
Why Undergo Upper Blepharoplasty
Men and women who are unhappy with the excess skin above their eyes and/or the excess fat along the inner upper lid are ideal candidates for an upper blepharoplasty. Candidates for this procedure should be:
- Generally healthy
- Non-smokers
- Have realistic expectations of the procedure
The majority of patients undergoing an upper blepharoplasty are over 35 years of age. This is because the signs of aging around the eyes typically begin to appear in one’s late 30s to early 40s. It is important during your initial consultation to be honest and forthcoming with your medical conditions and medications, as these can impact the results of the procedure.

What to Expect Before, During, and After the Procedure
Before the Procedure
During the initial consultation, an examination of the upper eyelids and face will be performed to determine if an upper eyelid surgery is appropriate. A review of your medical history will be performed to identify conditions or medications that can put you at increased risk of complications. Dr. Pautler will discuss your goals and desires and develop a customized plan to provide the best results and achieve a youthful, healthy appearance.
The Recovery Process
Bruising and swelling should be expected the first few days following the procedure. The maximum amount of discomfort will be experienced during the first week following the procedure. Minimizing activity, sleeping with the head elevated, cool compresses on the eyes, and taking the medications prescribed will help to reduce these symptoms. Sutures will be removed in the office six to seven days after the upper blepharoplasty surgery.
Light exercises and activities can resume one week after the procedure, but strenuous exercises and handstands should be avoided for at least two to three weeks. Most patients return to work around 10–14 days after surgery. Of note, wearing contacts should be avoided for two weeks after an upper eyelid surgery.

Our patient is 48 years old and healthy. She felt that she aged prematurely in her upper lids. Dr Pautler felt she was a great candidate for an upper lid blepharoplasty done under LOCAL anesthesia in the office. Here we show her pre-op photos, what her eyes looked like 5 days after for suture removal, and her final result at 8 weeks postoperatively.
The Cost of Upper Blepharoplasty in Pittsburgh
The cost of upper blepharoplasty depends on several factors. However, it typically ranges from $3,000 to $7,500. Some factors that are considered when determining the final price may include the surgeon’s experience, the extent of surgery, additional procedures, and associated support staff and surgical fees that must be covered.
Selecting an experienced surgeon with expertise in upper eyelid surgery is critical for obtaining the best results with fewer complications. This is one reason why upper blepharoplasty prices may fluctuate in different areas, and choosing a well-seasoned surgeon may result in higher costs.
Combining additional procedures with an upper eyelid lift can significantly increase the overall cost of the procedure. In addition, fees associated with the surgical sites, anesthesia costs, and follow-up appointments will be considered in the final price. At your initial consultation, you will be provided a detailed explanation of all the costs, as well as the available financing options, to help eliminate any confusion and reduce the stress of undergoing the procedure.
